Service Learning Week 1


For my Service Learning opportunity, I chose an elementary school near me at the foothills of Mount Ben Lomond.  The school has grades Kindergarten through sixth with 29 teachers.  There are approximately 630 students at the school. Of those students we have 9 Asians, 3 Black, 598 Caucasian, 22 Hispanic and 7 Multi Race.  The school received a “B” grade last year on their SAGE scores, but the previous year when I was employed by them, they received an “A”.   
The Data Gateway information for SAGE was listed for the 2016-2017 School year as follows.

During this semester I will be working with the third grade students and helping them with math and comprehension.  I sometimes take students to a back table in groups to go over key material they did not understand, or walk around the classroom helping students stay caught up with the teacher when she is giving instructions.  I also get to work one on one with those students who need a little bit of extra help.  I am excited to be working with the teacher and students.
This semester I also have the opportunity to go into a sixth grade classroom and work with the teacher and students during their math time.  The teacher was selected by the district to participate in a Math Enrichment program where they discuss the curriculum for the upcoming year.  I’m really excited to see what I can learn and also how to strategically help the students understand what they are learning.

Learning Behaviors

In attending to my service learning hours, I have been going into more than one class per week.  The third grade teacher that I am learning from has a unique way of teaching.  Her strengths are in Cognitivism as she is very organized in the things she teaches.  She presents her subject and helps the students with sensory and material.  For example, while I was in there she brought two pans of brownies for her math lesson.  She wrote on the board two fractions asking the students to write on their white boards which fraction was the largest.  The fractions were 1/2 and 1/24.  There were approximately five students who wrote 1/24 on their board and the rest wrote 1/2.  Those that wrote 1/2 understood the fraction question asked.  She then took the two pans of brownies and showed them what 1/2 of the pan looked like, and what 1/24 of the pan looked like.  There were 23 students in class and she asked me to help cut up the brownies equally into portions for the class.  I then offered an id

Positive Behavior Week 3

What does the cooperative teacher do to encourage a positive classroom community? In a math lesson on fractions, the teacher demonstrated how to fold a paper strip in equal thirds.   Each strip of paper was cut at exactly the same size.   Then the student were asked to draw a line on the crease, then write 1/3 in each section.   Then the students were given another strip of paper the exact same size and fold it into thirds.   Then they were asked to fold that in half, creating sixths.   I was busy running from desk to desk helping the student’s line up the ends of the paper before creasing it.   One student on the front row had folded her paper into ninths.   She realized she had too many sections for sixths so she cut three of the sections off her paper and wrote, 1/6 in each.   However, this student did not realize that by cutting the paper, the portions were no longer equal fractions to the thirds paper.   She did not ridicule the child or make her feel bad for what she had do
